Choosing The Right Education Program For Your Children

As parents, we only want the best for our children. To ensure a brighter future for them, we must provide them high quality of education moving forward. This is where the issue of choosing the right school for the children enters the picture. At this point, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has been suggesting various forms of parental choice, like charter schools and school vouchers, as alternate forms of learning for the kids. Although, the efficiency of such alternative learning is being questioned.

What Are Charter Schools?

The combination of public and private funding is the reason why charter schools in the United States exist, and unlike other public schools, these kind of schools operate independently from the public school system. Charter schools have their own charters or contracts with school school districts, states, or private organizations from which they receive their funding. The charters list down the academic outcomes that the school must be able to achieve.

One similarity between regular public school and charter school is that both of them cannot teach religion, or charge tuition or matriculation fees. Charter school students are also expected to finish their standardized tests, similar to public school students. Although, charter schools are not limited to accepting students from a particular geographic area, which makes them more autonomous and diverse compared to a regular public school.

What Are School Vouchers?

School vouchers can be considered as coupons, which allow parents to access public funds to send their children to the school of their choice. In this case, parents have the choice to send their kids to a private school or even a secular type of school. Most of the time, school vouchers are only given to families with low household income or students with special needs or disabilities.
